Meet the Team - Bruce Melvin
READ’s Meet the Team series is putting the spotlight on our Managing Director, Bruce Melvin, who took some time to answer a few questions about his professional background and what he gets up to when he is not spearheading our business!
What is your career background?
Interestingly enough, my professional journey began in finance as a Graduate Accountant. I fine-tuned my financial expertise, laying the groundwork for a diverse career in the Energy sector. From various roles including Operations Controller and Managing Director, each career step reflects my passion for helping companies navigate through critical periods of growth and transformation. My journey, and growing range of responsibilities, has allowed me to develop to a comprehensive skill set which helps me stay on track in an everchanging industry.
What does a typical day look like for you?
At READ, there’s no such thing as a “typical” day! When I drive to work in the morning, I can never predict what to expect as we pride ourselves with a high-quality responsive service so priorities can shift quickly. Predominantly, I will be in and out of meetings, interactive with staff and clients. Working with a diverse client base and offering an independent product line means that every day brings new challenges. And we love a challenge!
What is the most inspiring part of your job?
Witnessing the company’s growth over almost 10 years and its expanding geographical footprint is truly motivating. But that’s not all – working closely with the team and observing their personal and professional progression adds pride and value to my life. It makes my job all the more rewarding.
What would you do (for a career) if you weren’t doing this?
Back in school, my love for mathematics & physics would likely have led me to choose a career in engineering – maybe I would still be working at READ but down in the workshop developing tools.
What has been your biggest work challenge, and how did you overcome it?
The pandemic presented a significant challenge for every person in every industry, navigating expectations of flexibility post-pandemic, maintaining productivity, overcoming supply chain issues – the list goes on. Understanding the needs of the business and personal needs of individuals played a crucial role in overcoming these challenges. As a Managing Director, driving career progression in a smaller organisation poses another hurdle which I try my best to steer by finding the most suitable roles for the most suitable team member and building dynamics accordingly.
What do you enjoy doing when you are not working?
I really enjoy travelling, always eager to explore new places. Some of my other hobbies include playing squash and skiing, which help me relax. I also like going out for food to try different cuisines and taking leisurely walks with my two dogs.
If you could have a superpower, what would it be?
I can try stopping the rainy weather in Aberdeen however, I don’t think that any superpower is strong enough to do that! Teleporting to different places would suit with my passion for travelling; imagine being able to instantaneously jet off to a sunny place for the weekend then teleport back for the workweek – now that would be ideal.
Where is your favourite place in the world?
One of the most incredible places I’ve ever visited is Buzios in the district of Brazil, a hidden gem north of Rio de Janeiro. It has the most beautiful beaches, unique charm and architectural harmony.
